Ultrasound and Guided injections

Diagnostic ultrasound

  • To better understand your injury, our specialist physiotherapists perform an ultrasound scan. This gives us a more detailed and accurate diagnosis, and helps us to plan the most effective injection for you, if one is needed.
  • This detailed scan gives you a more precise diagnosis and serves as a vital safety check to ensure an injection is the right and safest option for you. It also helps us choose the specific type of injection—like a steroid or hyaluronic acid—that will work best for your body.
  • The scan gives us a clear, detailed picture of tissues like your tendons. This helps us create a smarter and more effective recovery plan for you, guiding your care before and after an injection to ensure you achieve the best possible outcome.
  • For your convenience, our ‘one-stop’ clinic allows you to have your assessment, scan, and injection all in a single visit, saving you time and multiple trips.
  • Our priority is to provide the right care for you. If we determine after your assessment and scan that an injection is not your best option, you will only pay for the assessment.

Which conditions can Ultrasound diagnose?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a safe, radiation-free imaging technique. It uses sound waves to provide a real-time, moving picture of your muscles, tendons, and joints, allowing us to see how they function as you move.

Diagnostic ultrasound assesses many musculoskeletal structures:

Joint – swelling and inflammation, synovitis, cysts, osteoarthritis.

Bursa – swollen, thickened, and inflamed bursas (bursitis).

Ligament – tears and ruptures.

Tendon – tears and ruptures, tendinosis (degeneration), tenosynovitis (inflammation).

Muscle – tears and haematomas.

Nerve – inflammation and entrapment.

Bone – whilst X-ray is typically the first-choice imaging modality for bones, osteoarthritis can be seen on ultrasound, and sometimes certain bone fractures are also visible on ultrasound.

  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinopathies around the wrist and hand
  • Calf, hamstring, and quadriceps muscle tears
  • Ankle and knee ligament tears
  • Baker’s cyst, patella tendinopathy, osteoarthritis at the knee
  • Achilles and other tendinopathies around the ankle
  • Gluteal tendinopathy and bursitis at the hip

Why book for a diagnostic Ultrasound scan?

We use diagnostic ultrasound to enhance our physiotherapy assessments, enabling a precise diagnosis and effective treatment plan for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Our clinical specialists are dually qualified as highly experienced physiotherapists and certified sonographers with postgraduate qualifications. They are also fully trained injection therapists and independent prescribers, offering a complete and integrated approach to your care.

According to 2020 professional guidelines, ultrasound findings require clinical context to be meaningful. Our clinicians are uniquely qualified to provide this, as they are both expert physiotherapists and trained sonographers. This dual expertise ensures your scan is immediately interpreted in light of your physical assessment, allowing for more precise decision-making and the most effective management of your condition.

A thorough physical assessment is often enough to diagnose an injury and begin treatment. However, when a diagnosis is uncertain or a patient’s recovery isn’t progressing, a diagnostic ultrasound is an invaluable tool. It allows our clinical specialists to look deeper, differentiate between potential issues, and quickly establish the most effective treatment plan. A scan can also help us understand why your symptoms may not be improving, confirming or refining a diagnosis to get your recovery back on track.

We use diagnostic ultrasound because it provides you with a faster, more accurate diagnosis. When an expert musculoskeletal physiotherapist performs the scan during your physical assessment, you get a complete picture of your injury in one session.

This technology is as accurate as an MRI for many conditions, but with key advantages. It lets us see how your joints and muscles work when you move, and we can immediately compare your injured side to your healthy side. This comprehensive approach ensures we create the most effective treatment plan for you.

All injections include:

  • Comprehensive clinical assessment and ultrasound scan prior to the injection (all part of fee)
  • Clear explanation of findings and the role of injections in treatment
  • Detailed discussion of the pros and cons of injection therapy
  • All injections are carried out under ultrasound guidance to ensure safety, accuracy, and effectiveness
  • Overview of how injection therapy fits into an overall treatment programme
  • Report of assessment, scan findings, and injection details
Ultrasound and Guided injections

When you have an injection, you want to be sure it’s hitting the right spot. That’s why we use ultrasound guidance for every injection we perform.

Research has repeatedly shown this is the best approach. It helps us see exactly where the needle is going, which means your pain relief is more effective and lasts longer. It’s also much safer, as we can steer clear of any nerves or blood vessels.

This accuracy means we get it right the first time, avoiding the need for extra injections. Many patients also find the procedure more comfortable because the precision of the ultrasound allows for a gentler approach.

Which body parts are we able to Inject?

Our clinic offers a range of advanced injection therapies to manage musculoskeletal pain. For conditions driven by inflammation, such as frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, or tenosynovitis, highly effective steroid injections can provide significant relief. We also specialise in hyaluronic acid injections (Ostenil® and Durolane®), which are ideal for managing the symptoms of degenerative joint pain like osteoarthritis. These injections help to lubricate and cushion the joint, supporting patients who are keen to remain active.
